Good news for Peace October 5

Hello friends of Peace,

I was blessed to be able to visit one of our people this week with some others from Peace. This was such an encouragement to me. I can’t tell you how important it is for us to be a group of God-followers who together, love each other and drive out sin. And friends, this is how we do it.

Our next Team and Task Time is November 7th at 6:30 p.m., with dinner together beforehand. Come and join me, let’s join together to bring people the gospel of Jesus.

Congregational Business Meetings

Our October meetings to conduct congregation business are coming up. These business meetings are a great chance for us to publicly praise, thank, honor, and glorify God for the work he has done this past year, and to ask him to do more than we could ask for in 2024.

  • October 15th 10:45 Congregational Forum -

  • October 22nd 10:44 Voters’ Meeting

Pastor will present the 2024 ministry plan and budget. Highlights include:

  1. We’ll approve the ministry plan and budget with an income of about $155K and expenses about $160K.

  2. The council wants ratification of a special hail damage expense of about $8K.

  3. We'd like the congregation to accept the purchase of a second stove by the Ladies Guild and to pay for the necessary electrical from memorial funds.

  4. Review Bible removal

  5. Review furniture

  6. Introduce a new room arrangement

Kids Ministry and Space

Kids class space

Check out our fresh space for kids!

For the fall, we have decided to try giving the kids better class space. We’ve moved them into the rooms off the family center. We’ve got a lot that we’d like to do to those rooms, if we can keep them there.

Some benefits include

  • Right sized - it’s a better size space for the number of people, so it is easier to hear, talk, see etc

  • Improved safety - it’s further from the front door with more limited access as well as easy exit; it also has fewer items that could be problems

  • Dedicated space - it’s a space just for our kids; it can stay clean just for them.

We’re trying this for the fall; come check it out and let us know what you think!

Good news for Peace September 23

Hello friends of Peace,

Why me?

He listed one act of grace after another. I won’t even tell them. They’re his. Suffice it to say, I was struck by them. They seemed real.

Why me? That was his response.

The doctrine of election humbles us. Out of everything and everyone in the universe, God chose some. He chose his people.

Imagine what it feels like to be part of the row of animals at the shelter. A family walks in and walks down the row. They see a dog. He is happy, playful, delightful, and alive. The family jumps at him. But on the other side is a somber, sullen, and restrained pup. He lies there without moving. Mom says, “that’s the one”. Over the protests, the “but nos”, and the sighs, he slowly comes to life. “He’s the one.”

They choose for life. That’s what selection does. It gives life.

Friends, we don’t know why. He simply choose us.

So we learn to say, “I am his.”

See you Sunday, so that we, in this moment, can learn to say, “I am his.”

Service at 9:30, study at 8:00 and 10:45

CarePortal

Have you heard of CarePortal? CarePortal is an organization and tools to connect local congregations with community needs. It’s something we’ve been invited to participate in.

There are no obligations. We’re simply presented with needs and allowed to step in if we’d like. Here is a recent example:

“A single mother and her four children are experiencing homelessness. She is currently getting them back and forth to school and to doctor's appointments; however, her car tags expired and she already has received a ticket for not having updated tags. The cost of renewing her tags for one year, the time she needs to get out of homelessness. This will directly impact the children's ability to go to school and get to other places without it. If a donor is found, arrangements for direct payment to Secretary of State”

Check out the video if you’d like (https://youtu.be/pKopTMAN8M0?si=_XMIUjBfgEnbbjyB) and feel free to respond to this note if you’ve got questions.

Good news for Peace September 2

Hello friends of Peace,

Pastor recently returned a divine call to serve at St Paul's in North Mankato.

The reason was simple: the Lord gave him a conviction to do the work here.

In many ways, it was an excellent call - a large group of people committed to serving, wonderful music, a live for God's Word, a regular prayer group, and an openness to the work of the Holy Spirit.

I remain strongly interested in the work here.

  • I like our interest in financial health and want both the congregation and our individual families to get financially sound

  • I like the joint middle school high school work we do and see lots of chances to grow it. I hope 2 or 3 is you will join me and we make it better.

  • I like our interest in personal gospel bringing and want to train 25% of you to be excellent gospel bringers in your homes and lives

  • I want to pass off the tech work. It's time for people other than my family to do it.

  • I like our simplicity and want to help us downsize and simplify our ministry. We need to be more agile for the challenges to come.

  • I want to partner with our local churches to start the Hastings ministry

  • I like our progress in Kalamazoo and want to see that grow and develop

There is a lot of great ministry to be part of here in Otsego plainwell. I like being part of it with you and hope you'll join me!

But this call also makes another point.

The congregation in Mankato had gone four years without a pastor. This needs to stop. There are 300 souls that come to service each week without a pastor.

We have lots of small congregations in this area served by one pastor. Christians raise up the next group of people and pass their life on. Friends, that's what we need to do.

Let's get to it!

New member celebration

On Sunday, September 3rd, two young ladies, Clara and Ellise, will join the congregation as they make a public professions of faith. During the service, we will confirm their faith and pray for them. After the service, we’ll have a little celebration. Please come and celebrate with them!

Sundae Sunday

September 10th following the service the new Otsego - Plainwell Right to Life group would like the opportunity to meet you all. They are coming to serve us ice cream sundaes! See you for Sundae Sunday!

Welcome Home/Fall kick off

Hey! I’m getting excited for our fall event to Welcome friends and family Home and kick off our fall ministry! It’s a great time to be God’s people. Our world might be falling apart, but God is building a far better one with us. Let’s get to it!

  • installation service

  • cook out and lunch

  • family Olympics!

Please pray for the family of Dave Myers

David Arthur William Myers

Dear friends and family of Dave

On Monday, August 28th David Arthur William Myers finished his journey with us and was brought to his eternal rest with Jesus. Christians everywhere have been represented well by Dave. He was baptized as a child and as a young adult consciously decided to live in that commitment. He made his faith evident at Peace and other congregations as an faithful father and husband, an elder, a Sunday School teacher, and loving Christian.

Now Dave has finished his race. I am comforted to know that Jesus won the race for him and so has assured him of the crown of life. I pray that you have the same comfort and look to your own eternal rest:

“Then I heard what sounded like a great multitude… shouting, ‘Hallelujah! For our God Almighty reigns. Let us rejoice and be glad and give him glory! For the wedding of the Lamb has come, and his bridegroom has made himself ready. Fine linen, bright and clean, was given him to wear.'” (Revelation 19)

No matter what else Dave endured, he never turned away from the body of Christ. He missed it when he was not here. He eagerly desired the Lord’s Supper, confessed his sins, and sorrowed over the evil of life. His dear wife Jeanne faithfully cared and watched over him, and they worked mightily to love their friends and family.

We will miss his companionship.

Obituary: To read Dave’s obituary, please visit https://www.winkelfuneralhome.com/david-myers/

Visitation: Visitation will take place on September 1st from 12:00 p.m. to 12:45 p.m. at Peace Lutheran Church.

Internment: Dave will be interred immediately following the service at Mountain Home Cemetery in Otsego.

Light meal: Everyone is welcome to enjoy a light meal after the service and internment at Peace.

Memorials: To give a memorial to Peace in honor of Dave, please go to https://peaceotsego.org/give and select “Memorial” or attend the funeral.

I invite you to gather with all of us to mourn and celebrate the victory Jesus gave to Dave. May Jesus give us eternal peace.

Serving the living Savior

Pastor Nathaniel Timmermann

Please pray for Dave’s family:

Lord Jesus, by your victory over death you have opened the way to eternal life for all of us. Comfort Dave’s family in their loss. Let their grief empty their souls of pain, hurt, and disappointment. Fill them up with new life. Renew their joy each morning. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

Good news for Peace August 25th

Hello friends of Peace,

Big thanks to Kart Wedge, Tom Wright, Cindy Commissaris, Mike Grimm, and Ellise Wedge for the last few weeks of great work!

What is the most important key you have? I remember getting the keys to my boss’ station wagon when I was only 17. That was quite the feeling. I was shocked to sense the responsibility he was giving me. I felt myself grow in the moment.

The ancient world used keys too. The picture above shows Polystrate at Kerameikos. She is holding a temple key. She has been trusted with the most important key in town - the key to the local temple. She has access to the local god.

That’s the picture Jesus draws in Matthew 16. He has given us the keys. And not just any keys. The keys to the kingdom of heaven. You and I get to be priests to the best temple in heaven and earth.

Do you feel yourself grow? The moment he hands it to us, I can feel myself grow a little bigger, a little stronger, and a little taller.

Want to hear more about how great God’s church is? Enjoy this wonderful essay from Jonathan Hein. https://www.readcube.com/library/0e5c1ee1-ba9b-4330-8687-f942441d3ffd:da3860eb-f7eb-4721-a58b-1d5d3fa8ac21

I hear it quite often. “I don't have a problem with God or Jesus. I'm just not into organized religion.” I have a problem with disorganized religion. I want the right people to have the keys. And this Sunday that can be you!

See you Sunday at 9:30!

Evangelism workshop

A huge shift takes place in life when we realize that we have been saved only by the gracious love of God whether we need it or not, no matter how good or bad we are.

It’s the difference between calling the gospel a doctor or a lightning bolt. If you get sick, you go to a doctor and ask for help. The doctor helps you; maybe even saves you from dieing. You’re so grateful that you go and tell anyone who is sick about the doctor. But what if you aren’t sick?

The gospel is just as much like a lightning bolt. It strikes us when we’re walking down the street and hits us out of the blue. Whether we want it or not, we have to figure out what to do with it. The lightning bolt of the gospel has irreversibly changed our life.

That’s the gospel!

Come to the evangelism workshop Saturday morning 9:30 and become the lightning bolt in someone’s life!

Good news for Peace August 4th

Hello friends of Peace,

How many friends do you have? Many people have many fewer friends than years ago. But hopefully our friends are better.

Most of us like friends, enjoy friends, and want friends. Do we know how to make and keep friends? That’s the challenge!

We’ve heard so much about great relationships these last months. Most importantly that relationships are essential to well - being and happiness. https://youtu.be/ulJBL_Ek3wI

This week we’re going to wrap up with friendships - one of our favorite relationships. We hear about Jesus the friend of sinners. Can’t wait to see you!

We’ll be outdoors at 9:30.

P.S. We’re working on the budget and ministry plan for 2024. If you have any thoughts or suggestions, let us know please!

Pastor call

Pastor has received a divine call to serve at St Paul’s Lutheran Church, North Mankato https://www.stpaulsnorthmankato.com/. St Paul’s has been without a pastor for almost 4 years now. St Paul’s is a vital congregation in the Mankato area. They have an early learning center with about 100 kids. They are part of a local elementary school association. Students can go on to Minnesota Valley Lutheran High School. They support the high school and connect with both Martin Luther College and Bethany Lutheran College. They have a strong music ministry and take care of the college ministry in Mankato.

We’ll spend the next few weeks considering our ministry at Peace and St Paul’s. Please pray with us and for us so that God gives us confidence in our conviction.

I appreciate this call at this time. Churches everywhere need to help people tell the gospel in their own homes, workplaces, and communities. I love to be part of churches excited to do God’s work. I imagine you do too.

Let’s see what God is going to do next!

Feel free to reach out with any wisdom and encouragement you might have. Pastor T

Prayer chain

I’d like to thank Julie Wyhowski for serving as prayer chain coordinator for quite a few years. She has served God’s people so well and kept us praying! A huge blessing.

She has finished her service. Pastor is going to take care of the prayer chain for a while. If you’d like to join our prayer chain or have a prayer request, please reach out to the office at 269-694-6104.

Let’s keep praying! God wants to hear the prayers of his people.

Good news for Peace July 15th

Hello friends of Peace,

What makes for a good life? We’ve heard a number of key ideas already this summer.

  1. Relationships are essential to well - being and happiness. https://youtu.be/ulJBL_Ek3wI

  2. Relationships are central (not the only thing, but at the center) in the growth process of life.”

  3. The frequency and the quality of our contact with other people are two major predictors of happiness. (social fitness)

  4. Attention is the essential asset/resource/material of happiness. It must be managed.

This week we’re going to take the next key idea. It addresses the challenges and struggles of life. How do we handle the challenges of life? This week we’ll take a look at Esther, Paul’s instruction to the Galatians in chapter 6, and part of the sermon on the mount as we hear what God has to say. Hint! Relationships matters in the challenges, too!

Can’t wait to see you and enjoy God’s Word with you!

Outdoor service rescheduled

Let’s find ways to bring the gospel to our city! Talk to pastor and give some suggestions today.

Please pray for the family of Pat Greene

Pat Greene

Dear friends and family of Pat,

On Saturday, June 17th, Pat finished her journey with us and was brought to her eternal rest with Jesus. We remember Pat fondly as a baptized child of God. I am comforted to know that Jesus triumphed for her.

Pat was cared for by a few of our friends over the last years. They dedicated a lot of time and love to her. A faithful pastor served her. What grace!

Obituary: To read Pat’s obituary, please visit https://obits.mlive.com/us/obituaries/kalamazoo/name/pat-greene-obituary?id=52281643 . The obituary will be posted there when it is available.

Memorial: Pat will have a memorial service on Monday June 26th Peace Lutheran Church at 11:00 a.m.

The service is open to the public.

The service will be available via livestream for those who are unable to attend in person. Please see our site https://peaceotsego.org/worship or visit our YouTube page Peace Lutheran Church - YouTube. The service will be available a little bit before 11 am and be archived afterwards.

Visitation: Visitation will take place on Monday June 26th from 10:00 - 10:45 am at Peace Lutheran Church.

There will not be a lunch or burial after the service.

Memorial: To give a memorial to Peace in honor of Pat, please go to https://peaceotsego.org/give and select “Memorial” or attend the funeral.

I invite you to gather with all of us to mourn and celebrate the victory Jesus gave to Pat. May Jesus give us eternal peace

Serving the living Savior

Pastor Nathaniel Timmermann

Please pray for Pat’s family:

Lord Jesus, by your victory over death you have opened the way to eternal life for all of us. Comfort Pat’s family in their loss. Let their grief empty their souls of pain, hurt, and disappointment. Fill them up with new life. Renew their joy each morning. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

Good news for Peace June 16

Hello friends of Peace,

We honor and praise God as our true Father. We’re glad to pray for every father.

Send us a picture of your family this Father’s Day and we’ll pray for you.

“In this sense, good fathers are a reflection of God’s grace. And even though a good father’s goodness is not the same as God’s goodness, it is, in a way, like it. A father’s love is not the same as God’s love, but it does reflect the truth of God’s love. God shows us a glimpse of Himself when He grants use the gift of a good earthly father. We then point to something or someone here in our everyday life, our dad, and say, God is like that. …. God has also promised to meet us in His Word, in His sacraments, and in the communion and mutual consolation and conversion of His saints. … The picture of a good father is the picture of consolation that he provides in the home to point His children toward Christ.” (Scott Keith, Being Dad, pg 5-6)

Good news for Peace June 3

Hello friends of Peace,

We had a good time recognizing our students for the year. I’m thankful for them and their participation.

I’m convinced that every little bit they are doing to learn God’s Word is good.

What do you think really makes life good? That’s what we’re going to start to consider this weekend. If you want to make your own choices about a good life, start to check out the work from Robert Waldinger and Marc Schulz https://www.harvard.com/book/the_good_life/.

We’ll be at the pavilion Sunday for outdoor service 9:30 am!

Clean Out

Clean Out is going well. I hope the members who have new items are enjoying them!

Starting June 4th, items are available to the community. If you’ve got friends, family, or neighbors who could use things, let them know.

Basic Faith for Grades 6-8 students

Basic Faith for Grades 6-8 students

How do learn faith? How do we gain hearts that believe what is a good and true, and lives that live what is good and true?

Our answer is catechism - a special class designed for middle school students.

After our children learn the narrative of the Bible through Old and New Testament stories (PreK4 - 5th grade, middle school students (grades 6-8) receive the next level of instruction in catechism class. Catechism class systematically instructs students in the basic teachings of the Christian faith. Catechism doesn’t teach Bible stories; it teaches doctrine so we can gain the mind of Christ.

If

  • you’re a 6-8th grade student now or in the fall of 2023

  • you’ve attended our Sunday School classes to learn the basic stories (or learned them another way)

I hope you’ll join me for this class. I love spending time with you and helping you learn to follow Jesus.

If you are a parent of a 5th grader, please contact me so that I can get your student registered for the class. Call or text 269-694-6104.

Our 2023 group will start June 4th at 10:45 am!

Good news for Peace May 19

Hello friends of Peace,

Evangelism Workshop

The other day someone commented how much they liked our sermons. This person is not part of Peace or a professing Christian. But they appreciated that our messages included history and culture, were friendly, and spoke to us instead of at us.

This is the kind of difference the gospel makes us. Small differences that add up. A willingness to sacrifice and give day after day.

Join me Saturday morning May 20th 9:30 am to be filled with the gospel so you can pass it on.

Student recognition, end of year meal

We’ll end the school year with a recognition of our students (and teachers). After service, we’ll have a meal together.

For more info and to sign up to bring food to share, check out https://peaceotsego.org/peacenews/202305/studentrecognition

Clean Out

The Clean Out has gone well.

Again, we want to have a simple, effective, clean space to fill people with the gospel. Then they can take that gospel to others!

Starting May 21st, most items are available for taking. For details, please see:

https://peaceotsego.org/peacenews/2023cleanout

Facility Use

Need space for your party this summer? Peace’s facility is available for graduations, baby showers, family reunions, and a host of other gatherings. Contact church@peaceotsego.org or 269-694-6104

Evangelism workshop

Evangelism workshop

The gospel is not information or advice. It is news. Even if it is the best news in the world, it can be hard to share.

Our evangelism workshop develops the skills essential for every day gospel sharing:

  • noticing and enhancing spaces and places for gospel sharing

  • gospel sharing tools

  • personal coaching

Our next workshop is Saturday May 20th 9:30 am. It’s a chance to be filled with the gospel and share that gospel.

One hour. Refreshments provided. :-)
