Dear friends,
Tension. Balance. Harmony.
Tension exists in life and that is good. Gravity pulls you down. Your muscles push you up. When gravity stops, you float. When your muscles stop, you are crushed to the ground.
Balance is helpful. The water flows down the Kalamazoo River, but it never empties. Lake Michigan never overflows. The water completes its cycle and maintains a balance.
Harmony enriches and deepens life. Musical notes combine to form more beautiful sounds – harmonizations. The new sound is more than both sounds individually played.
Tension. Balance. Harmony. We experience them regularly. Each has its place.
God points out many areas of tension, balance, and harmony in our lives. We reject them to our detriment; we embrace them to our benefit.
For example, Paul writes, “creation itself will be liberated from its bondage to decay”. That must mean creation is decaying right now. We could even say the world is falling apart. At the same time, Isaiah says, “I am making all things new”. These points aren’t in conflict. They reveal tension to us.
James tells us “confess our sins”. The Psalm writer says, “The eyes of the Lord are on the righteous.” We are filled with sin and yet we never overflow, because God the Holy Spirit also makes us righteous.
